Now through the grace of God we claim

Michael Perry (d.1996) was a Church of England vicar who was one of those behind the popular collections Psalm Praise and Carol Praise and other books from Jubilate. As well as writing some 200 hymns, psalm versions, and religious musicals, he published many books and commentaries. Other responsibilities and interests included representing the churches on national policing bodies. The composer of ‘Stracathro’, Charles Hutcheson (1792-1850), a Glasgow merchant, was a founder of the Glasgow Dilettanti Society, whose aim was the improvement of the fine arts. A fellow member of St George’s Church (now St George’s Tron) was Sir James Campbell, Lord Provost of Glasgow, who in 1848 bought the mansion of Stracathro in Angus after which this tune, one of many Hutcheson wrote, is named. It became very popular when sung by the Glasgow Orpheus Choir under Sir Hugh Roberton in the first half of the 20th century.
