Gather us in, thou Love that fillest all!

Possibly the most controversial hymn in the book (it appears in few others), George Matheson’s hymn affirms the other major faiths in the world, in the much longer original going into detail about their particular insights, and suggesting that ‘in many ships we seek one spirit-land’. Glasgow-born Matheson (1842-1906), virtually blind from his mid-teens, was minister at Innellan (near Dunoon) for 20 years before moving to St Bernard’s, an Edinburgh congregation of some 2,000 members. His hymns make effective use of imagery, and are among some of the best-loved across the churches. A garden has been created in his memory round the church at Innellan, featuring (especially with blind visitors in mind) the more aromatic of plants. The origin of the tune is not known, but it has a Scottish flavour.
