God has made laughter, laughter for me

Kathy Wonson Eddy (born 1951) is an ordained minister in the United

Church of Christ, formerly a pastor in Bethany Church in Randolph, Vermont, but
now a full time composer, writing for both sacred and secular contexts. In her
work she particularly celebrates the connections between the spiritual journey
and the arts. The words of this song come from Genesis 21:6 where Sarah greets
with incredulous laughter the idea that she might bear a child and is set to a
tune which ripples with hilarity. It was written for a dramatic musical (her
husband was librettist) in 1982, Ceremony of Women’s Songs; telling
stories about women in the Bible, it was written for the New England UCC
Women’s Event that year and was later performed on tour to many New England
churches. In 1988, she performed another
of their musicals, about Patrick and Columba, on a visit to Iona Abbey.
