Now go in peace

Michael Mair (b.1942) is a Church of Scotland minister who worked as a
Community Worker in Coventry, and has served in parishes in Dumbarton, Aberdeen
and Dundee. He says: ‘I wrote ‘When I receive’
[566] and ‘Now go in peace’ some time in the 1990s as minister in Holburn West.
I was composing lots of hymns for use there, many of them too preachy and
doctrinal. These two came in moments of relaxation and rapid composition, which
let something genuine come through.’ The song was originally used as
part of the Benediction at the end of services. He heard the tune in a primary
school in Coventry; a ‘junkanoo’ is a street parade
with music, dance, and costumes of mixed African origin found in many islands
across the English-speaking Caribbean every Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. It
is effective when sung as a round.
