Come, children, join to sing

Christian Bateman (d.1889) was born in England and in the course of his ministry in the Moravian and Congregational Churches came to Edinburgh. Later he moved back to England and became an Anglican priest in England and Wales. The hymn book he edited for children was the one principally used in Scottish Sunday Schools for many years, The Children’s Hymnal and Christian Year. This is a rewriting of a hymn by William Edward Hickson (d.1870), ‘Join now in praise, and sing’. The first line may reflect the Latin beginning of Psalm 113, ‘Laudate pueri’. The ‘Spanish’ connection in the tune’s name may be more to do with its popularity in the 12th Light Dragoons (traditionally played at tattoo – a way of calling ‘time’ in the hostelries of towns in which regiments are quartered) going back to the time of the Peninsular War.
